Packing up for Takhli

This was me (on the left) in May of 1972, packing up to go to Takhli. (If anybody can identify my co-worker on the right, gimme a yell.)

Mean Machine featuring the Soulful Gents

Who's this guy in the funny shirt?

These two are undoubtedly good for a yuk or two (or more). They were taken at Korat in 1973. I was in a GI band called "The Mean Machine Featuring The Soulful Gents." In the top photo, which was taken in the practice room of the USO, we have (l-r) yours truly, Ken H. (fellow Clevelander), Gary Chenoweth (Utah), Carlton "Bobby" Powell (Washington DC), William "Ken" Brandon (Maryland), and Barry East (no idea where he's from). If you know where I can find any of these yardbirds, leave me a note (pun intended).

The bottom photo, taken in the NCO club, shows what happens when you try and fix airplanes by day and indulge yourself at night (a little too often). And yes, the shirt is (was?) for real!

Jeff, wiping down the MATS Connie

Here I am again, 24 years later (1996), wiping down the MATS Connie, a Lockheed Constellation that travels the country 6 months a year. (Check out the Constellation page if you haven't already done so.) We go through this after every landing...it seems to use as much oil as gasoline!

Jeff & F-4 at Korat

This was taken at Korat in '72. I didn't have to look too far to find a plane with a red star on the splitter plate. I'm standing in front of an ECM pod, which I used to fix when I worked on F-4s. (I worked on the EB-66s at Korat.)

Jeff and F-4 at the USAF Museum

Here I am, 20-some years later, standing next to another F-4 with a red star on the splitter plate. This F-4C, flown by Ubon's great Robin Olds, is now resting at the United States Air Force Museum in Dayton. Both red stars were earned in a single day in 1967. (This was as close as I could get to old haunts -- I used to work on the F-4D.

Jeff and the wooden elephant

This was taken at a corner of Takhli called the Thai BX. I forget how much this chan (elephant) cost, but I'm sure it cost a lot of Baht to ship to this country!

BT-13 and me

This is yours truly standing next to a Vultee BT-13 "Valiant" (more likely called "vibrator" by student pilots) in 1983. Owned by a Dallas stockbroker, it was one of many World War II planes at the big airshow of the Confederate Air Force. Thanks to creative use of a press pass, I was able to sandbag a ride in this and a couple of others. This was my first...I was hooked! For other scenes of Airsho'83, click HERE.

Jeff at Amvets

In June 1998, I was honored to have been the featured speaker at the Circleville (Ohio) Amvets chapter as they dedicated an F-105 in honor of a local resident killed in the Vietnam war.

TLC Brotherhood '98

The biggest Rogues Gallery to be found: the TLC Brotherhood! This is the group picture of our 1998 reunion, at the USAF Museum. It was quite an auspicious occasion! To link to the TLC web site, click on the picture.
